The Dyess WCT braved the Texas heat Saturday to provide assistance to a veteran. Saturday’s project not only involved painting the house but building an elevated garden so the homeowner could continue what he loves to do as multiple back surgeries have made a conventional garden impractical and painful. The WCT also surprised the homeowner with some additional landscaping and new outdoor lighting system.
The project was led my SSgt Michael Miller (photo above). Being a team leader for a We Care Team leader requires additional work such as visiting with the homeowner, determining if the work required is something that can be done by the WCT and then making a list and purchasing all of the required materials for the day of the project. On the day of the project it is the team leaders responsibility to organize all of the volunteers and assign them to the specific task that need to be completed for the project. Not only was SSgt Miller busy with the work at hand but was also making sure that the volunteers were drinking enough water and taking breaks because of the extreme Texas heat.
SrA Maritza Smith (photo above) led the landscape design and effort for the project. SrA Smith provided a drawing of the layout for the landscape effort and utilized railroad ties to build the elevated garden. The new landscape and security lighting installation was led by Jason Smith. Because of the amount of work being done, the WCT was not able to finish all of the work in one day. Plans are to return next Saturday, July 7 to complete the work.
The WCT would like to give a very special thank you to Malm Construction, Lowes (North Side), Ridgewood Transport and Kelly Moore Paint for making this project happen!
