The Dyess We Care Team founder MSgt (Ret) Gordon Storey will appear on the Merit Street Morning Show.

Before and After

The Dyess We Care Team recently completed another house painting project located within the city of Abilene.  The image above shows a qucik before and after of the project.  The particular project was a little unique in that a film crew from Dr. Phil’s Merit Street TV was onsite to do a story on the Dyess We Care Team.  The Dr. Phil Show learned about the We Care Team upon seeing the recent CNN Heroes video regarding it’s founder, MSgt (Ret) Gordon Storey. The video can be viewed by clicking on the following link: WCT 2024 CNN Heroes.

Volunteering promotes positive social interaction, which helps develop a strong support system.

The Dyess We Care Team simply uses community service as a conduit.  Volunteering promotes positive social interaction, which helps develop a strong support system.  Based on the research conducted by Dr. Allan Luks and Dr. Stephen Post (2017), the impact of a Civic Service Program on biopsychosocial outcome of post 8/11 U.S. Military Veterans… findings:  Volunteering resulted in decrease in loneliness, and increase in purpose in life, and an increase in perceived social support.  Volunteering was associated with significant improvements in health, mental health and social outcome in veterans. The biopsychosocial (BPS) model is a scientific and philosophical theory that examines the relationship between biological, psychological, and social factors in health, disease, and healthcare. The BPS model is a patient-centered approach that emphasizes how these factors interact to determine the cause, manifestation, and resolution of illness. It’s used in medical training and clinical practice to guide clinicians in providing patient-centered care.

Volunteering

  • Fights depression
  • Increases self-confidence and builds leadership skills
  • Provides a sense of purpose
  • Builds interpersonal relationships/connectivity
  • Increases your social and relationship skills
  • Improves workplace skills:  teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, project planning, task management and general organization

Developing Leadership Through Community Service

The Team Leader program, the backbone of the WCT, is used to develop Airmen outside of their military roles into responsible leaders. By empowering even the lowest of ranks, the WCT and the Team Leader program allows all motivated Airmen to take hold of designated service projects from start to finish.  These Airmen lead teams, ofter consisting of highter ranking officers and senior enlisted, through all stages of the project until completion. The Team Leader program is a perfect example of how the WCT marries the Air Force mission with its own.

A big thank you to our good friends at Belles Chicken Dinner House for providing lunch to our volunteers!  Bells is always a favorite with our WCT volunteers!!
