On Saturday, June 11th, approximately 43 We Care Team volunteers showed up to begin painting the home of Mrs. Self. The project was led by team leader A1C Kyle Glotzbach, pictured in the photo above. Kyle has only been in Abilene at Dyess Air Force Base for approximately one year and this was his first WCT project to lead as team leader. Kyle did an awesome job!
Mrs. Self was excited to see everyone as they arrived and came outdoors to greet and give everyone a hug. She was very appreciative for everyone coming out in the heat to paint her house as well as trim some of the shrubs. She said that she has grown more fond of brighter colors in her later years and wanted a new look for her home, something a little brighter. So the WCT chose a brighter yellow paint than what was originally on the house from our good friends at the Abilene North Lowe’s and Valspar Paint. The window awnings were painted in a hunter green. The WCT also cleaned out the rain gutters and will be installing rain gutter guards to help prevent the gutters from getting clogged from the falling leaves and small twigs in the future.
And of course it just couldn’t be a WCT project without a tasty lunch from our good friends at Red Robin. Mrs. Self even came out to join the volunteers for a delicious Red Robin burger. She said this was her first hamburger to have ever had from Red Robin and claimed them to be the best burger she had ever had.
Once the paint colors begin going on the house, Mrs. Self couldn’t resist and had to come out and take a peek. She was all smiles as she saw her freshly painted home for the first time as indicated in the photo below. She loves the new brighter colors and said her neighbors were going to be jealous. She said she was not planning to tell her brother about her house being painted and was going to wait until he dropped by for a visit and surprise him.
The WCT did not complete the project on this Saturday as the house is going to require a second coat of paint. The WCT will be scheduling a return visit to complete the house painting at a later date. Information will be communicated once the date has been scheduled. Mrs. Self was very thankful not only for the work the WCT had come out to do on her home but also for the service these men and women have chosen to give to our country. After all she said, “they could have been out having a lot more fun on their day off but instead they chose to come and help someone in need”. Very fitting for a project whom team leader A1C Kyle Glotzbach coined with the name ‘Service Before “Self”‘. Thank you Mrs. Self for helping to make this a very special day.
